Location
Marly is a locality and a Swiss commune in the canton of Fribourg, located in the Sarine district.
Marly is located 4 km (as the crow flies) south of the city of Fribourg and at an altitude of 627 m. The commune extends along the Gérine valley to its confluence with the Sarine, as well as over the adjacent molasse deposits of the Fribourg plateau. The territory of Marly extends over 7.7 km.
Bus line no. 8 connects the eco-district to Fribourg and even continues to Corminboeuf. There is a frequency of 15 minutes.
The central part of the territory is occupied by the Gérine valley, up to 800 m wide, which flows from east to west. The river course is engaged in a canal that protects the valley floor, which was once often flooded. Downstream, the Gérine flows through a narrow gorge formed by the La Grangette plateau and Marly-le-Petit, before emptying into the Sarine.
South of the Gérine valley, the commune's territory extends towards the adjoining forested heights: Bois de l'Église, Vers le Bois (at 730 m altitude, the highest point in Marly) and Bois de Monteynan (704 m altitude). These woods are crossed by small streams such as the Ruisseau de Copy. To the north, a high plateau about 1 km wide joins the bottom of the Gérine valley. This plateau drops through multiple meanders of the Sarine river through the molasse layers. The slope difference reaches 100 m in some places and is crisscrossed by sandstone rocks. Along the Sarine runs the western and northern border of the commune.
